Samuel Z. Goldhaber, MD
Samuel Z. Goldhaber, MD, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, is Interim Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section Head of Vascular Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). He has co-directed the current 5-day BWH Cardiovascular Update Course since its inception.
He directs the BWH Thrombosis Research Group and serves as Principal Investigator of a broad range of randomized clinical trials and observational studies related to the prevention, treatment, and epidemiology of venous thromboembolism, stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, and prevention of recurrent myocardial infarction. Dr. Goldhaber has received the Certificate of Appreciation from the Surgeon General of the United States.
Dr. Goldhaber has a busy clinical practice of general cardiology and thrombosis patients. He also runs the Cardiology Consult Service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Goldhaber earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA and completed his training in internal medicine and cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is President and Founding Director of the nonprofit organization, North American Thrombosis Forum (www.NATFonline.org).

Peter Libby, MD
Peter Libby, MD, is a cardiovascular specialist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and holds the Mallinckrodt Professorship of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He served as Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at BWH from 1998 - 2014. His areas of clinical expertise include general and preventive cardiology. His current major research focus is the role of inflammation in vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. Dr. Libby has a particular devotion to translate his basic laboratory studies to pilot and then large-scale clinical cardiovascular outcome trials. He instigated and helped to lead the large scale Canakinumab Anti-Inflammatory Thrombosis Outcomes Trial that provided clinical validation of the role of inflammation in atherosclerosis.
Dr. Libby has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research accomplishments, including most recently the Gold Medal of the European Society of Cardiology (2011), the Basic Research Prize of the American Heart Association (2011), the Anitschkow Prize in Atherosclerosis Research of the European Atherosclerosis Society (2013), and the Special Award of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (2014). He has received a number of lifetime achievement awards various organizations. Dr. Libby was selected as Consulting Editor of the year by Circulation Research in 2015, and received a 2015 High Citation Award as an editorial board member of Arteriosclerosis ,Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. He was the laureate of the Ernst Jung Gold Medal for Medicine for 2016, and received the Earl Benditt Award from the North American Vascular Biology Organization in 2017. In 2018 he received the Arthur Agaston Award for Preventive Cardiology and an honorary doctorate degree from the Université Laval.
Dr. Libby’s elected professional memberships include the Association of American Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and honorary memberships in the British Atherosclerosis Society, the Japan Circulation Society, and the Japanese College of Cardiology. He has served as the President of the Association of University Cardiologists. He also has served in many roles as a volunteer for the American Heart Association, including chairman of several research committees and member of the executive committees of the Councils on Arteriosclerosis, Circulation, and Basic Science. He presided the American College of Cardiology’s Research Allocations Peer Review Committee for two terms. He has frequently consulted for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, including a 5-year term on the Board of Scientific Councilors. He directed the DW Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center and two cycles of Leducq Foundation Awards, and has received continuous funding from the US National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for several decades.
An author and lecturer on cardiovascular medicine and atherosclerosis, Dr. Libby has published extensively in medical journals including Circulation, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature. He is an Editor of Braunwald’s Heart Disease, having served as the Editor-in Chief of the 8th Edition. Dr. Libby has also contributed chapters on the pathogenesis, treatment, and prevention of atherosclerosis to many editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine. He has held numerous visiting professorships and delivered more than 100 major named or keynote lectures throughout the world.

Patrick T. O’Gara, MD
Patrick T. O'Gara, MD is the Watkins Family Distinguished Chair in Cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His clinical activities are focused on patients with valvular and structural heart diseases, as well as diseases of the aorta. Since 2001, he has been named annually among the Top Doctors in Boston and the U.S. and enjoys an international referral practice.
O'Gara served as President of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in 2014-15. Additional ACC leadership positions include his roles as Co-Chair of the ACC 2012 Scientific Session Program Committee, Co-directorship of the ACC Board Review Course for Certification and Recertification, and Editor-in-Chief of the ACC Self-Assessment Program (ACCSAP). He served as Chair of the American Heart Association's (AHA's) Council on Clinical Cardiology from 2003-2005 and was the inaugural Editor of Heart Insight magazine from 2006 to 2011. In 2011, he received the Paul Dudley White Award from the Boston Division of the AHA Founder's Affiliate and has also been recognized with the Laennec Master Clinician Award (2011) and the Laennec Clinician Educator Award (2012). O'Gara was Chair of the writing committee for the 2013 ACC/AHA Guideline for the Management of Patients with ST-Elevation MI and has participated in several other guideline, expert consensus, scientific advisory and appropriate use criteria writing groups. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the AHA/ACC Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines.
O’Gara has a longstanding interest in clinical and research issues at the interface of cardiology and cardiac surgery. He has served as the Steering Committee Co-Chair of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CTSN) since its inception in 2007. The Network has established important clinical registries and completed several landmark randomized trials in cardiac surgery centered on ischemic mitral regurgitation, atrial fibrillation and neuroprotection. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee for the pivotal Apollo Trial (Medtronic) examining the comparative effectiveness of transcatheter versus open surgical bioprosthetic mitral valve replacement in high-risk patients with severe mitral regurgitation.
O’Gara is Deputy Editor for JAMA Cardiology and is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation. He lectures and teaches across multiple venues.
